Napili-Ingests disc battery, 2-year-old child undergoes emergency surgery at Santobono: he is in intensive care
Moments of fear for a family from Naples: a child of just two years old swallowed a disc drum and underwent delicate emergency surgery at the Santobono hospital in Naples.
The child is currently hospitalized in intensive care, but his condition is said to be stable.
The alarm was raised by his little sister, who noticed the moment when her little brother ingested a foreign body. Shortly after, the child began to show worrying symptoms: difficulty swallowing and excessive salivation.
His parents immediately took him to the hospital in Aversa, where the first tests confirmed the seriousness of the situation. An emergency transfer to Santobono was then arranged by ambulance.
Upon arrival at the pediatric hospital in Vomero, the child underwent further tests. The x-ray revealed the presence of a button battery stuck in the esophagus, already adhering to the tissues and causing progressive necrosis.
All attempts at endoscopic removal were in vain: the multidisciplinary team, coordinated by Dr. Giovanni Gaglione, director of the UOC of Emergency Pediatric Surgery, decided to perform a more invasive surgical procedure, accessing the esophagus through the neck.
The battery was eventually successfully removed, avoiding further complications.
The operation, performed during the night between Friday and Saturday, was attended by anesthetists Alessandra Alifuoco and Giovanna Mastrominico, surgeons Maria Chiara Cianci, Francesca Lalla and Gaglione himself, and gastroenterologist Cristina Bucci.
The little boy remains under observation in intensive care, but the doctors are confident.

It is a very serious and worrying situation, I hope the child gets better soon. It is strange how a child can ingest such a dangerous object, we should be more careful for our children.
