Chanting "Free Palestine", thousands of Neapolitans invaded Piazza Municipio yesterday to show solidarity with the Palestinians and with the owners and employees of the Taverna Santa Chiara,
In recent days they have been subjected to verbal provocations by a couple of Israeli customers who accused them of being supporters of terrorists because of their unconditional support, always expressed, for the struggle of resistance that the Palestinian people are carrying out against the massacre suffered for decades by the Israeli army.
The demonstrators were all strongly and unconditionally aligned with the Palestinian cause and saw the presence in the square, among others, of Father Alex Zanotelli and of the Neapolitan musician Daniele Sepe.
“I am grateful to Naples – Father Zanotelli stated – because when I arrived I saw this square almost full. For me it is a miracle. It is what we have been trying to carry forward for weeks and instead now the Neapolitan people spontaneously took to the streets in response to what happened”.
“I was 15 years old – Daniele Sepe declared – when I did the first concert for Palestine with Gian Maria Volonté and with mechanical Demetrius Stratos.

The political condemnation of the square was very harsh towards the municipal administration of Naples for not having yet taken a tough position against the genocide in Gaza. The resignation of the mayor Gaetano Manfredi was loudly requested.
Omar Suleiman, representative of the Palestinian community in Naples, wanted to thank the Neapolitan city for the solidarity expressed.
“Naples – said Suleiman – is once again in the square for Palestine. When the city of Naples and all those who have Palestine in their hearts are called to express solidarity with Palestine, Neapolitans are always there. Today more than ever it is necessary to intensify these moments of protest because it is already too late.
It should have been done yesterday to stop the massacre and the genocide. Now it is already too late. People are starting to die of hunger and thirst after almost eighteen months of closure, with a lack of hospitals, food, medicine and fuel.”

I think the demonstration was an important thing to make the voice of those who need help heard. However, it seems to me that there are still many problems to be solved and it is not enough to just have an event in the square.
