The preliminary investigations judge of the Court of Naples, Valentina Giovanniello, sentenced Luigi De Lucia and Pasquale Rinaldi, alias 'o Vichingo, to 30 years in prison, held responsible for having escorted the car in which Gelsomina Verde, the young innocent victim of the Scampia feud of 2004, was kidnapped and killed.

The first-instance ruling fully accepts the requests made by prosecutors Maurizio De Marco and Stefania Di Dona of the Naples District Anti-Mafia Directorate.

Gelsomina, just 21 years old, was kidnapped and tortured because she was thought to be close, for work reasons, to the Notturno family, in particular to Gennaro Notturno, known as 'o Sarracino, boss of the “separatist” clan and rival of the Di Lauro clan.

The young woman was interrogated for hours, but revealed nothing: she did not know the boss's face, as later confirmed.

But the killers didn't believe her. She was killed and her body burned in a car to cover up any traces.

The collaboration of numerous Camorra informants was decisive in reconstructing the role of the accused, including Pietro Esposito, Gennaro Puzella, Rosario Guarino, Carlo Capasso and Salvatore Tamburrino, former sutler of Marco Di Lauro, now a collaborator of justice after the murder of his partner Norina Matuozzo.

In the courtroom, when the sentence was read, the victim's brother, Francesco Verde, and her mother Anna Lucarelli, represented by the lawyer Liana Nesta, were present. The Polis Foundation, with the lawyer Gianmario Siani, and the Municipality of Naples also joined the civil action.

The story of Gelsomina Verde continues to represent one of the most painful pages in the recent history of the Camorra, a symbol of an innocent sacrificed to the brutal logic of the clans.

This sentence is very important because it shows that justice can do something against the Camorra. Gelsomina deserves to be remembered and her case must teach us all not to turn our heads the other way.
