According to the reconstruction of the Carabinieri, Fiorillo was working without a regular contract for a small construction company in Portici when a lintel collapsed on him. The weight unbalanced him, causing him to fall down the stairs. Despite the timely arrival of 118, there was nothing that could be done for the man.
Employer investigated for manslaughter
The employer, present at the time of the crime, was interrogated at length. He admitted that Fiorillo was working illegally, confirming a practice that is unfortunately widespread in the construction sector. The Nocera Inferiore Prosecutor's Office has opened a case for manslaughter, seizing the body pending an autopsy.
The technicians of SPSAL (Workplace Prevention and Safety Service) also intervened on site to verify the conditions of the construction site. An investigation is underway to understand whether the accident was avoidable and whether safety regulations were respected.
Fiorillo, married and father of two, leaves behind a grieving family. The body was transferred to the Nocera Inferiore hospital pending legal formalities.
The emergency of undeclared work on construction sites
The episode puts the spotlight back on the phenomenon of irregular work in construction sector, often linked to high-risk conditions. Institutions are called to intervene with more stringent controls to avoid further tragedies.
