Gabriel Zuchtriegel remains at the helm of the Pompeii Archaeological Park. The Presidency of the Council of Ministers has officially communicated to Parliament the extension of the general management position for the German director naturalized Italian, who will continue to lead one of the most visited and symbolic archaeological sites in the world.
The confirmation, which came at the proposal of the Ministry of Culture led by Gennaro Sangiuliano and the Department for the Promotion of Cultural Heritage directed by Alfonsina Russo, renews confidence in Zuchtriegel for a second four-year term, after the one that began in 2021.
"I thank Minister Giuli and Dr. Russo for their trust," he declared in April, on the eve of the decision. "It is an honor to be able to continue working with an exceptional team in a place that presents us with extraordinary challenges every day."
Born in 1981, an archaeologist with a classical education, Zuchtriegel built his professional profile between Germany and Italy, with studies at Berlin, Rome and Bonn and a doctorate dedicated to the site of Gabii, in Lazio. Since 2015 he has directed first Paestum, then also Velia, both UNESCO heritage sites, distinguishing himself for his scientific rigor and ability to dialogue with the public. Author of important academic publications and professor at several Italian and German universities, Zuchtriegel has made the dialogue between science, communication and accessibility the hallmark of his approach to the valorization of cultural heritage.
Naturalized Italian in 2020, he has often emphasized his deep bond with our country: "I have never felt like a foreigner, I have been welcomed with great affection since the beginning". His confirmation is a sign of continuity and trust in a modern vision of heritage, capable of bringing together protection, research and openness to the world. Pompeii, once again, looks to the future with a guide who has already left his mark.

It is interesting to see how Zuchtriegel continues to lead Pompeii, but it is not clear what his real innovations are. Let's hope that his second term brings new ideas and projects to better enhance the site.
