Pompeii – The State Police have tightened the handcuffs around the wrists of a man seriously suspected of having defrauded an elderly resident of Pompeii with the tried and tested technique of the “fake grandson”.
The officers of the Pompeii Police Station, in execution of a house arrest order issued by the GIP of the Torre Annunziata Court at the request of the Prosecutor's Office, arrested the man, considered responsible for fraud aggravated by the advanced age of the victim and improper use of credit cards.
The investigations, conducted by the Pompeii Police Station under the coordination of the Public Prosecutor's Office, began following the complaint of the injured party. Through the analysis of numerous video surveillance systems and telephone records, the investigators were able to reconstruct the modus operandi of the suspect, who allegedly acted in conjunction with other individuals still in the identification phase.
According to the findings, the man allegedly contacted the elderly lady by phone, pretending to be her nephew, and warned her about his imminent arrest. Using this pretext, he allegedly convinced her to prepare money and valuables to avert the alleged critical situation.
Subsequently, the suspect allegedly showed up at the victim's home, managing to get him to hand over approximately 450 euros in cash, some jewelry, and a credit card. Not content, the man then used the stolen card to withdraw another 250 euros from an ATM, obtaining an overall unjust profit estimated at approximately 7.000 euros.
At the end of the legal procedures, the arrested person was placed under house arrest at his home, pending further decisions by the Judicial Authority. The episode highlights once again the vulnerability of the elderly in the face of scams of this kind and the importance of promptly reporting to the police.
