Benevento – A vast drug dealing network in the Sannio area has been dismantled by the Carabinieri of Benevento and Cerreto Sannita at the end of a complex investigation coordinated by the Benevento Public Prosecutor's Office.
Twelve people were affected by a precautionary measure order issued by the investigating judge of the Sannio Court, including prison, house arrest and obligations to sign in , against individuals residing in the provinces of Benevento, Naples and Caserta.
According to investigators' reconstruction, the suspects are seriously suspected of possession and sale of narcotic substances—including cocaine, crack, hashish, and marijuana —between 2018 and March 2023. Telephone and computer wiretaps , as well as field observations, seizures, and interviews with persons knowledgeable about the facts, were crucial to the investigation .
One of the details that emerged was particularly disturbing: some of the sales were coordinated directly from inside the prison by an inmate already detained for drug-related crimes, who managed the illicit activity through the abusive use of cell phones.
Three Pushers in Prison and Six Under House Arrest
Specifically, three people were jailed , six were placed under house arrest , and three others were ordered to report to the judicial police. In several cases, the drugs were found to be sourced from suppliers operating in the province of Naples , a hub for illicit trafficking.
In some documented incidents, the Carabinieri had already intervened with arrests in flagrante delicto , thus initiating proceedings parallel to those which have now resulted in precautionary measures.
The investigation, as highlighted by acting prosecutor Gianfranco Scarfò , once again underlines the ability of criminal organisations to operate even from places of detention , exploiting technological means and a dense network of external contacts.
