Naples - A serious episode occurred yesterday in the Secondigliano prison, where a Brazilian prisoner belonging to the trans community set fire to the furniture of the room where he was being held, in the infirmary ward.
The fire – fueled by a mattress, sheets, stool and other objects – seriously endangered his life and that of the other inmates in the ward.
The intervention of the Penitentiary Police personnel was providential, avoiding tragic consequences by managing to save the man, who was then urgently transferred to the hospital for the burns he suffered.
"This episode demonstrates how urgent it is to guarantee adequate psychological and psychiatric support to the most fragile prisoners", he declared Louis Castaldo, vice-president of the CON.SI.PE. union.
Along the same lines Bruno Faraldo, a union leader, who spoke of "a critical event that put the entire department in danger" and called for immediate measures to protect workers and inmates.
Trade unionists praised the courageous intervention of the prison officers, reiterating the need for structural reforms: from the reorganization of the prison population based on crimes and personal conditions, to overcoming serious staffing shortages that often force personnel to cover multiple roles at the same time, reducing the effectiveness of surveillance.

This episode shows how things are difficult in prison, but more should have been done to prevent such situations. It is important that prisoners receive the right support, also for their psychological and physical well-being.
