One of them introduced himself as a Carabinieri marshal, the other as a lawyer, and in a few hours they snatched 90 thousand euros in cash from a 12-year-old woman, taking advantage of her vulnerability and playing on her fear for her daughter's fate. But the scam, carried out with ruthless coldness last February 24, has today led to the arrest of the two perpetrators thanks to the investigative activity of the Carabinieri of the Sorrento company.
The house arrest precautionary measure was executed this morning in Benevento and Nola, by order of the preliminary investigations judge of the Torre Annunziata Court.

According to the reconstruction, the victim had been contacted by telephone by one of the two, who pretended to be a Carabinieri marshal and told her that her daughter had been arrested after causing an accident. The only way to "save her" - he allegedly told her - was to hand over all the cash and jewelry in the house to a lawyer who would show up shortly thereafter. And that's how the other scammer promptly showed up at the old lady's door, making off with the 12 euro loot.
The investigations allowed to identify with high probability the two perpetrators of the scam, who had already gotten into trouble the previous month for a similar scam and were arrested red-handed by the Carabinieri of Senise (Potenza) on March 17. The activity of the Sorrento military has closed the circle on a story that confirms that scams against the elderly are still a plague that knows no respite.

It is truly incredible how people can take advantage of the vulnerability of the elderly, especially in fearful situations like this. The investigations have been well done but it is sad to know that such scammers exist.
