Students from the Campania region were catapulted into an audiovisual adventure with the "Terra mia" competition, organized by the ISIS Elena di Savoia in Naples.
This boldly ambitious initiative calls on young people to explore the visceral connection between the places of Campania and their inhabitants, transforming classrooms into improvised and perhaps a little chaotic film sets.
A controversial tribute to a local icon
Starting from the title of a famous song, the competition invites the kids to produce videos that tell their territories, inspired by the song by Pino Daniele, a former student of the Diaz institute, now a branch of Elena di Savoia.
"The project – explains Daniela Oliviero, head teacher of ISIS Elena di Savoia – is a training and film dissemination initiative carried out within the project “Cinematic and audiovisual language as an object and tool for education and training” promoted by MIM and the Ministry of Culture. Our school was one of the few to receive funding.
The project has a dual purpose: to learn the theory and put into practice the phases of a film production (writing, production, editing) aimed at creating a short film and to organize a film competition”. Between topics such as legal education, environmental protection, landscape beauties and local stories, the students had to navigate a sea of creativity, with selections that involved collective visions and merciless criticism.
Creative challenges and prizes that spark discussion
Participants didn't just shoot videos: they took charge of the organization, from drafting the competition announcement to creating eye-catching graphics and award catalogs. The first edition of the film festival will culminate on May 14 at the Cinema Materdei in Naples, with screenings of finalist works and awards for categories such as short films, documentaries, music videos and commercials. Each winning school will take home plaques and certificates, in an event that promises to spark among participants.
Conclusion with a touch of polemical nostalgia
“The title of the project – continues Daniela Oliviero – It is a tribute to the figure of Pino Daniele who was a student at our branch office, the “Armando Diaz” complex, located in via dei Tribunali, 370. The institute also has a classroom dedicated to him where a mural depicting him has been created.
This connection with the black in the middle was a starting point for the creation and development of the short film made by our students. The songs of Pino Daniele were listened to, linking them to the themes of the competition, developing the creative ideas that became films.
The memory of Pino Daniele, a world-renowned artist, is still strongly present in the neighborhood where our school works, where the singer lived and spent his youth, where he took his first steps as a musician. Among other things, we still keep in our archives the parchment of his high school diploma, which Pino never collected”. With this mix of cinema, culture and a pinch of local controversy, the competition is shaking up the foundations of regional education.

The initiative is very interesting and encourages young people to participate. However, I wonder if schools have the resources necessary to manage such a large project and if there will be enough funds for all the students who want to participate.
