According to the investigators' reconstruction, last January the man, already known to the police, allegedly contacted the victim by telephone pretending to be a carabiniere, with the complicity of other individuals.

Shortly afterward, a fake carabiniere in civilian clothes showed up at the woman's door and demanded 1.500 euros in cash and jewelry worth about 10 euros. Only later did the elderly woman contact her son, discovering that she had been scammed.
The Carabinieri immediately launched an investigation, acquiring surveillance camera footage and identifying a taxi that had driven the suspect from the Trieste station to the victim's home. By comparing the footage with law enforcement databases, they identified the scammer, who was later found to be already in custody in Vicenza for a similar scam.
The arrest was carried out by order of the Prosecutor's Office. In a note, the Carabinieri recall the importance of not trusting alarming phone calls from strangers and invite citizens, especially the elderly, to immediately contact the police in case of doubts or suspicions.
