Salerno – A video of a few seconds, taken in the corridors of the University of Salerno and went viral on social media, shining a spotlight on a tense verbal altercation between a teacher and a student.
The video, without a complete official reconstruction, shows a heated exchange that has gone viral on the web.
In the video, the professor, identified as Gennaro Avallone, appears to call for order in order to be able to hold a lesson, stating: “I’m giving a lesson.” At that point, the student, filmed mostly from behind, replies annoyed: “But shut up.”
The professor's reaction is: "This is the level". The young man doubles down, with a dialect expression that leaves no room for interpretation: "Do you want to shut up or not? You don't have to go crazy. But are you good with your head? Go give a lesson and don't be a pain in the ass".
The student is a former regional deputy of the M5S: disciplinary proceedings have been activated
The University of Salerno, in an official note, stigmatized the incident, communicating that "disciplinary proceedings have already been initiated against the student identified as responsible for the episode, as required by current regulations".
Rector Vincenzo Loia and the entire University reaffirmed “the centrality of students”, underlining that this “cannot and must not in any case go beyond the ethical and behavioral limits of respect and civility”.
Shortly after, the identity of the student emerged: it is Luigi Iovino, former deputy of the 5 Star Movement. Iovino himself confirmed his presence in the affair in an interview with Corriere del Mezzogiorno – Salerno edition: “Yes, it’s me. I’m not hiding”.
However, he was keen to point out that his objection concerns the fact that "only part of the story was shown. Before those images there was a long sequence of provocations, defamations and verbal attacks against me. A hostile climate that was deliberately omitted".
Considering the affair to be exploited, Iovino announced that he will turn to "the competent authorities to protect me and re-establish the truth of the facts".
Professor Avallone's Reply
Professor Gennaro Avallone also intervened in the matter with a long post on social media, without going into the details of the episode. He wrote: “I was lucky enough to work as a researcher and then as a professor at the university. (…) The university exists because there are students and this is not, for me, a simple starting point or rhetoric: it is the reason why I ask for teaching to be done well and I am committed to doing it.
Obviously, I ask only one thing in return: the relational condition that allows good teaching, therefore the reciprocity of respect. (…) A negative episode, a divergent moment, do not even for a moment call into question this privilege, for which I continue to thank even now the students who have allowed me to have it over time”.
The episode has sparked a debate about politeness, mutual respect and the limits of behavior within academic institutions.
