L'America's Cup 2027, which will be held in Napoli, promises to be not only a sporting event, but also an economic one of national importance: the estimated impact on the Italian economy is over 1,2 billion euros, with the creation of 11 thousand new jobs in the tourism, nautical and services sectors.
The Ministry of Tourism released the data, on the occasion of the final stage of the Vespucci Tour in Genoa. "We move from the most beautiful sailing ship in the world, the Vespucci, to the most coveted cup in the world, the America's Cup," said Minister Daniela Santanchè. "A strategic event for Italy, capable of accelerating infrastructural development and promoting Naples, the South and the entire country."
The study, carried out by the statistics office of the Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with the Luiss Business School, analyses the economic, social and urban impact of the event based on data provided by Unimpresa on 15 May.
According to the report, the direct impact of the event will be around 690 million euros, destined to rise to 1,2 billion considering the reputational effects and the post-event economic return.
The estimated budget for the organization is around 100 million euros, of which 70% will be spent locally, generating a multiplier effect on the local economies.
Particular attention is paid to the reputational effect: according to forecasts, Naples will benefit from a 5-10% increase in annual tourist flow and an additional expenditure of between 200 and 400 million euros per year in the two years following the competition.
The report also introduces the concept of “impact value”, mapping stakeholders, beneficiaries and areas of influence in the short and long term. The recipients of the positive effects include residents, tourists, students, businesses and third sector entities.
«We are certain – added Santanchè during the conference dedicated to nautical tourism, held in the Conference Hall of the Villaggio Italia in Genoa – that the America's Cup 2027 will be a growth engine for Naples.
Not only for the economic benefits, but also for the quality of urban life and the enhancement of cultural heritage. Every euro invested in the event - he underlined - doubles its social value and, in the long term, can even quadruple it". An opportunity, in short, not only for Naples, but for the entire country.

The 2027 America's Cup in Naples is a major event, but I'm not sure the economic impact is really that high. The creation of new jobs is always welcome, but we'll have to see if it's effective.
