The incident, whose contours are still unclear, is now the subject of an investigation conducted by the Carabinieri of the Sapri Company, with the support of the Provincial Command of Naples, to ascertain the causes of the injuries and verify any responsibilities.
The clinical picture that emerged at Santobono is dramatic: according to what was ascertained by magnetic resonance imaging and total body CT, Pietro has a fracture of the right femur, old rib lesions compatible with previous traumas and extensive brain damage. A series of elements that suggest traumatic episodes that occurred at different times.
The head of Santobono, Giuseppe Cinalli: "There are serious brain lesions"
“There are fractures, one of the femur, and signs of previous rib fractures. And there are serious brain injuries whose mechanism is difficult to establish with absolute certainty”. Giuseppe Cinalli is the head of Neurosurgery at the Santobono Hospital in Naples. He is the one who explained to the journalists who flocked to the hospital, the conditions of the nine-month-old child originally from Vibonati, in Cilento, who arrived with serious fractures.
“Bone fractures are generally considered to be caused by direct trauma. The brain injuries were definitely caused by something that happened yesterday afternoon. The femur ones are older, the rib ones even older.”
“The child,” Cinalli reiterates, “arrived in extremely serious conditions, with signs of imminent death, such as to justify a life-saving intervention. He remains in extremely critical conditions.”
The mother on Facebook accuses the doctors of the Sapri hospital
Raising further doubts is the child's mother, a 25-year-old originally from Licusati and resident in Villammare for several months, who in a post on Facebook openly accuses the hospital that had initially examined him.
“Why on May 28, when I took my son to the hospital, was he sent home with only an antibiotic?” the woman wrote, asking for answers and respect for the pain her family is facing. “Shut up and leave us alone,” she added in an appeal to the community.
The first hospital admission, in fact, dates back to May 28, but on that occasion the little boy had been discharged with a simple pharmacological therapy. Only days later, his condition worsened, making it necessary to transfer him by helicopter ambulance to Naples.
Pietro lives in Villammare with his mother, his 4-year-old brother and the woman's partner. His father, a 32-year-old baker living in Sapri, was also interviewed by investigators and went to the hospital in tears as soon as he heard the news. The Carabinieri have started a series of hearings among family members and health workers to reconstruct the chronological sequence of events and verify whether there were errors, omissions or other crimes.
In the Gulf of Policastro, apprehension is growing. “We don’t know the mother well, she moved recently,” said the mayor of Vibonati, Manuel Borrelli. “At this moment, there is no word to speak of. All of us are thinking only of Pietro, in the hope that he can overcome this terrible ordeal.”
The next few hours will be crucial for the child's condition and to shed light on a story that has shocked an entire community.

It's very sad to hear a story like this, a child so young having to face such a serious situation. I hope that the doctors can do what they can to help him and that the family can find some peace in this difficult time.
