Naples – The mayors of Ercolano and San Giorgio a Cremano, two municipalities in the Vesuvian area administered by the center-left, are resigning to run for the next regional elections in Campania. They are Ciro Buonajuto and Giorgio Zinno, both at the helm of their respective cities for ten years.
The resignations come in compliance with the law that requires local administrators who are candidates for the Regional Council to leave their posts early.
Zinno, mayor of San Giorgio a Cremano, entrusted a social post to comment on his choice:
"After dedicating ten years of my life to our beloved city, often putting the needs of the community before my own, this decision was difficult and painful. But a regional law requires me to resign well in advance in order to run."
The outgoing mayor claims the work done:
“I leave a growing city, with ongoing urban redevelopment projects, parks, green areas, renovated streets and school buildings and a major cultural revival.”
Same step also for Ciro Buonajuto, at the helm of the Municipality of Herculaneum, who formalized his resignation by announcing his candidacy for the Regional Council:
"It's not a goodbye, but a new beginning. I am running to bring this energy, this vision and this territory to the choices that matter. Ercolano has experienced a season of rebirth: public spaces returned, legality reaffirmed, new infrastructures, more services, and a new image built on three pillars: Legality, Culture and Tourism".
Both mayors are therefore heading towards a new political challenge in view of the regional elections, leaving behind two decades of administrative experiences that, for better or for worse, have profoundly marked their respective territories.

It is great news that mayors are stepping down to run for office, but there are questions about how this will affect their city. Stability is important and I hope all goes well in the future.
I don't know if it's right for mayors to leave their positions before the elections. It could be risky for the community, because there is a need for continuity in local government.
The resignations are an interesting fact, but also worrying. I hope that the new candidates have clear ideas and can continue the work already started by their predecessors.
