Naples – An operational meeting was held this morning, at the call of the prefect of Naples Michele di Bari, to address the long-standing issue of tourist overcrowding on the island of Capri during the summer months, with particular attention to weekends.
The institutional and technical representatives involved in the management of the island participated in the meeting held in the Prefecture: the mayor of Anacapri, the councilor delegated to Transport of the Campania Region, the delegates of the Municipality of Capri, the heads of the Police Force, the commander of the Port Authority of Capri and the managers of the Transport and Roads Offices of the Metropolitan City of Naples.
Freight transport and port management: priority to night journeys
One of the main issues addressed was the regularity of night-time runs for the transport of goods and waste, with the aim of limiting the circulation of trucks and vans during the day to a minimum, thus avoiding further congestion on the narrow island roads.
On this point, the Campania Region has guaranteed maximum commitment, underlining the importance of effective coordination with the port authorities for smooth management of port activities.
Roads and public transport: rapid interventions needed
On the local public transport front, the Metropolitan City has ensured targeted interventions to accelerate the restyling of the road system in some critical points of the island. Among the actions planned, there is also a digital communication campaign aimed at encouraging the use of electronic methods for purchasing tickets, in order to reduce queues, crowds and waiting times in the main tourist hubs.
The Prefect announced that a new meeting will be called shortly to monitor the implementation of the measures discussed and evaluate the effectiveness of the first initiatives already implemented, with a view to sustainable management of tourist flows that, this year too, are expected to be impressive.
