Rome – He tried to scam an 88-year-old woman with the classic “fake grandson’s accident” scam, but his plan was foiled thanks to the quick thinking of a neighbor.

A 42 year old woman, originally from Napoli, was reported by the Carabinieri of the Operative and Radiomobile Unit of Colleferro, in the province of Rome, as part of a broader measure to combat scams targeting the elderly, set up by the Provincial Command.

The events occurred on the morning of Friday, June 28. A woman reported to 112, alarmed by what was happening to her neighbor: the elderly woman, visibly upset, had received several phone calls from self-styled lawyers and carabinieri informing her of an alleged road accident in which her nephew had been involved. In exchange for silence and impunity, the scammers asked her for cash and jewelry.

Upon the arrival of the Carabinieri, the 42-year-old was found under the victim's home, whose role in the attempted fraud was ascertained through immediate investigative checks. The woman was reported to the Public Prosecutor's Office of Velletri and, at the proposal of the NOR military, a preventive measure was also applied to her: the ban on returning to Colleferro for two years.

Elderly Scams: The Risk Remains High

The episode confirms the constant alarm on the front of scams against the elderly, often targeted by well-organized groups that exploit the fragility and emotionality of the victims. Once again, the collaboration of citizens and the timely intervention of the police are crucial.

Authorities reiterate the importance of immediately reporting any suspicious behavior, especially towards lonely elderly people: often, a simple phone call can make the difference between a successful scam and a fraudster brought to justice.
