The young man had been in Bari since December 2024, he had been condemned to 15 years and 4 months in prison last February.
The sensational escape occurred during the night between June 1 and 2 at the “Fornelli” Juvenile Detention Center in Bari. The 17-year-old managed to escape by breaking through the cell’s perimeter wall and lowering himself outside with knotted sheets. The news was released by Conaippe – Confederazione Autonoma Italiana Polizia Penitenziaria, which brings together the Cosp and Asppe unions.
Escape during a football match
According to the union, at the time of the escape, there were two other young inmates in the cell who chose not to follow him. The escaped prisoner was placed in the "first group" of the institute, which housed a total of three boys.
The circumstances of the escape are still being ascertained, but it could have happened during the evening of yesterday, during a football match, where the shouts from the stands could have covered the noise of the escape.
"The search for the escapee is currently underway by the Penitentiary Police and other law enforcement agencies and we trust that the fugitive can soon be tracked down, but this will not erase the flaws and dysfunctions of the system that must be addressed through a serious staffing policy, the Penitentiary Police lacks over 18 thousand agents compared to the needs, and training, but also reorganization both in relation to the very heavy overcrowding and under the more structural profile of the architecture of the penal execution system", declared instead Gennarino De Fazio, Secretary General of the UILPA Penitentiary Police.
The police are concentrating their searches in his home neighborhood, Pianura, and are searching the homes of family members and acquaintances, but at the moment the young fugitive has disappeared without a trace.
