Escaped from Elba Recaptured in Marigliano

Marigliano – An escape worthy of a historical novel, but with a pre-written ending. A 42-year-old prisoner, originally from Marigliano, lived his own version of Napoleon's escape from Elba, only to be recaptured by the Carabinieri a few days later in his hometown.

From Elba to Marigliano: the short “adventure”

The parallel with the famous French leader is not accidental. On February 26, 1815, Napoleon escaped from exile on Elba aboard the ship Incostant to reconquer France, starting the “Hundred Days”. 210 years later, on June 26, 2025, the 42-year-old – detained in the Porto Azzurro prison for robbery, violence and threatening a public official – takes advantage of a work permit in Campo nell'Elba and never returns to his cell.

Its escape, however, lasts much less than that of Bonaparte. If Napoleon reached France, the man headed for Marigliano, in the province of Naples, where his family lives. And it is precisely there that the Carabinieri of the San Vitaliano station tracked him down and arrested him.

House arrest and the new charge

The man is now under house arrest, awaiting trial, but a new crime has been added to his already difficult judicial situation: evasion.

A story that brings attention back to the issue of work permits for prisoners, a fundamental tool for social reintegration but which, in cases like this, can turn into an opportunity to attempt escape.

Meanwhile, unlike Napoleon – who at least regained power for a few months – the 42-year-old from Marigliano was back behind bars (albeit virtual ones) in just two days. A lightning “campaign”, but without glory.
