MARANO – “If you come here again I’ll kill you.” A chilling phrase, shouted angrily by a man who got out of a car going full speed, which almost hit a volunteer and a colony of cats. It happened in Marano, a town on the outskirts of Naples, near the ASL veterinary office on via Padreterno, where a citizen has been involved in caring for stray cats for some time. A dedication that someone, evidently, considers a fault.

The volunteer has received heavy and repeated threats, all for an absurd reason: taking care of animals “that make things dirty and cause a nuisance.” The most serious episode was reported to the Carabinieri and was captured on video that documents not only the verbal assault, but also the potentially homicidal act of the driver. “It's been going on like this for a year,” the victim tells, "several cats were run over and killed. And the person who made the threat is not new to this type of behavior, but he seems to feel above the law."

Giving voice to the complaint is the deputy of the Green-Left Alliance Francesco Emilio Borrelli, always at the forefront in the defense of animals and citizens' rights. “We are faced with a vile and criminal act,” he has declared. “Threatening those who take care of defenseless animals is miserable. And if you even try to run them over, you have crossed all limits. The authorities must intervene immediately, without hesitation.”

Borrelli asked for concrete and immediate measures: "Those who mistreat animals are also a danger to people. We will work to strengthen protections for volunteers and for feline colonies, which the law recognizes and protects. We need checks, reports, convictions. Those who threaten and harm must pay, without any more gray areas of impunity."

It is truly unacceptable that there are people who threaten those who take care of animals, especially cats. These actions are dangerous and should not be tolerated. The law must intervene to protect those who do good.
