Montemarano – The Carabinieri of the Montella Company have reported two men, a 26 year old from the province of Salerno and a 47-year-old from Castelvetere sul Calore (Av), accused of damaging and desecrating tombs after a night of vandalism between the cemeteries of Montemarano and Castelvetere sul Calore.
Late on the evening of Monday, June 16, the two allegedly stopped at the Montemarano cemetery, where they placed flowers – previously taken from a statue of Padre Pio in the town center – in front of the entrance gate. They then moved to Castelvetere sul Calore, entering the cemetery and desecrating private chapels and the internal church.
According to the investigations, they moved and piled up sacred objects such as candles, vases, vestments and other furnishings outside the buildings, leaving them in disarray along the entrances.
Having intervened promptly, the military personnel of the Montemarano Station and the Montella Radiomobile Operations Unit tracked down and identified the two, reporting them at large to the Avellino Prosecutor's Office.
The 26-year-old, already known to the police, was also banned from returning to the municipalities of Castelvetere and Montemarano, in addition to the withdrawal of his license due to its expiration.
The Carabinieri are checking whether the two may be involved in other similar incidents that have recently occurred in Irpinia.
