Napoli– “I don’t want to point the finger at anyone, but we need to shed full light on the conditions my son is in.”
These are the words of Giuseppe Mileo, biological father of little Pietro, the nine-month-old baby who has been in a coma for a week at the Santobono hospital in Naples, and who has entrusted his lawyer, Franco Maldonato, with an appeal for the truth.
The child's conditions remain very serious but stable. Pietro underwent two delicate brain surgeries for a cerebral edema and was also found to have previous fractures to the femur and ribs. A clinical situation that has raised questions and concerns, even in the absence - at the moment - of people formally investigated.
The little boy was initially taken to the hospital in Sapri, in the Salerno area, by his mother and her partner, then urgently transferred by helicopter to Naples. For several months he had been living in a small villa in Villammare, a hamlet of Vibonati, together with his mother, his four-year-old older brother and the woman's partner.
The man is not involved in the serious injuries suffered by little Pietro
The father, Giuseppe Mileo, is not involved in the matter, as confirmed by investigators. At the time of the emergency, he was not with his son. "As declared by the mother herself to the Carabinieri - explains lawyer Maldonato - our client was informed of the child's illness when the child had already been taken to the hospital".
The lawyer also clarifies that, according to the doctors of the Santobono, the cerebral hemorrhage could have been caused by a spontaneous event, not by an external trauma. "A theory - adds Maldonato - compatible with the absence of signs of contusion on the skull and with a previous diagnosis by the family pediatrician, according to which Pietro could have been born with a cerebral edema that later evolved into ischemia".
However, the issue remains fractures, for which a medical-legal investigation is requested. "It is necessary - concludes the lawyer - to precisely ascertain the origin of those traumas, inexplicable at present".
Meanwhile, the Juvenile Court of Potenza has suspended the mother's parental responsibility, placing the older brother in a protected community. A decision that the father's defense intends to appeal. "We will ask - Maldonato announced - that the child be entrusted to his father and grandparents, so that he can receive the affection and care he needs".

It's a really difficult situation, we hope that the authorities will clarify how things went. Children deserve to be protected and cared for in the best way, and families must be helped in such tragic moments.
