Entrepreneur Alfredo Romeo was sentenced in Naples: the judges of the first criminal section of the Neapolitan Court (panel A, president Conte) found him guilty and imposed a sentence of 7 years and 6 months of imprisonment.
Four years instead for Ivan Russo, architect and manager of Romeo Gestioni, considered his close collaborator.
The sentence came as part of the so-called "Neapolitan branch" of the investigation launched almost ten years ago by the public prosecutor Henry John Woodcock, then in force at the Naples Prosecutor's Office and now in service at the District Anti-Mafia Directorate. An investigation that, at the time, also gave rise to the well-known proceeding CONSIP, partly originating in Rome and partly remaining in the Campania capital.
Romeo was charged with six corruption cases and one supply fraud, while Russo was convicted of three corruption cases. The facts date back to the two-year period 2015-2016. At the center of the trial, alleged favors and gifts from the entrepreneur to public officials, including a former manager, some employees of the Municipality of Naples and an official of the Superintendency of Rome.
It is one of the strands of the Consip investigation
In November 2017 Romeo he was placed under house arrest, a measure later overturned by the Court of Cassation. This proceeding, initiated in 2018 with an immediate trial for the two defendants, represents one of the three strands into which the original investigation was divided: one was transferred to Rome (Consip trial), another revolves around the contracts of the Cardarelli hospital (still ongoing), while the third led to the sentence issued yesterday.
The ruling was also awaited by another section of the Court of Naples, where approximately fifty people involved in the main part of the investigation are currently accused.

The conviction of Alfredo Romeo and Ivan Russo is a very complicated situation, there are many legal implications that could have long-term effects on other trials. Corruption is a serious problem that must be addressed more severely.
