Napoli – A Nigerian woman has been arrested in Naples on charges of enslavement and human trafficking. The woman allegedly used voodoo rituals, threats and the seizure of documents to force her fellow countrywomen into prostitution.

The arrest was made by delegation of the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of Naples, at the end of complex investigations conducted by the Flying Squad of the Police Headquarters.
The Mechanism of Enslavement: Travel, Voodoo and Debt
According to the investigators' reconstruction, the woman allegedly introduced several compatriots into Italian territory through deception between 2017 and 2021.
Once in Italy, the victims were allegedly forced into prostitution through beatings and, above all, subjection to an alleged “voodoo rite”, which also involved their family members back home.
To regain their freedom and their documents, the young women would have been obligatory to pay a whopping 25 thousand euros plus interest, presented as “reimbursement of travel expenses.” These earnings were derived from the sexual services that the victims were forced to provide to clients selected by the woman.
From investigations to arrest in the province of Foggia
The investigations conducted by Flying Squad of Naples allowed us to reconstruct the suspect's modus operandi and track her down. The woman was finally located and arrested in the province of Foggia, putting an end to a horrifying system of exploitation based on physical and psychological coercion.
