Naples – Massive seizure of sea urchins during the night inside zone “A” of the Integral Reserve of the Marine Protected Area of the Gaiola Park.
The CP 890 patrol boat of the Port Authority of Naples surprised a vessel with two people on board while they were practicing illegal underwater fishing in an area completely forbidden to any type of activity.
About 1.000 live sea urchins were found on board the vessel and were immediately seized along with the diving equipment. The two fishermen were reported to the Judicial Authority for violating the fishing ban in the integral reserve.
The control is part of the regional operation “Eidotea”, coordinated by the Maritime Directorate of Naples through the Fishing Area Control Center (CCAP), and aimed at ensuring legality along the entire fishing chain, from capture to sale.
Particular attention has been paid to the traceability and labelling of products, in contrast to the marketing of fish without certified origin or potentially dangerous for public health.
As part of the complex operation, the military of the Campania Maritime Directorate carried out over 650 checks, issued 50 administrative sanctions, filed two criminal complaints and seized approximately two tons of non-compliant fish products, for a total value of approximately 75.000 euros.
The intervention confirms the commitment of the Port Authority to protect the marine ecosystem and repress illegal fishing, with the aim of promoting sustainable management of fish resources and food safety for consumers.
