Santa Maria Capua Vetere – A sudden mourning struck the Penitentiary Police of the S. Maria Capua Vetere prison today. A 50-year-old officer died of a sudden heart attack while he was working in the Ordinary Building Maintenance (MOF) department.
The news shocked colleagues and inmates, leaving a wave of grief throughout the prison community. The man, respected and known for his dedication to work, died before help could arrive.
A few hours after the tragedy, Si.NAPPe (National Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police) expressed deep emotion. "It is an immense pain that unites us all in a silence full of respect", declared Luigi Vargas, Deputy General Secretary, and Pasquale Gallo, National Secretary.
"The loss of a colleague on duty, in such dramatic circumstances, leaves an unfillable void. Our most sincere condolences go to his wife, his two daughters, his family and all the colleagues of the institute", they added, underlining the union's commitment to supporting the families of the agents, often forced to operate in conditions of high physical and emotional stress.
The episode brings the spotlight back on the critical working conditions of the prison staff, exposed to grueling shifts and situations of high tension. Si.NAPPe reiterates the need to improve the safety and well-being of agents, so that tragedies like this one do not happen again.
Meanwhile, the Prosecutor's Office has begun investigations to ascertain the precise causes of death, while colleagues are preparing to pay homage to the deceased officer with a commemoration in the coming days.

The news of this loss is very sad and makes us reflect on how the working conditions of agents can affect their health. We hope that something will be done to improve the safety and well-being of those who work in such difficult situations.
