UA tragedy occurred yesterday early afternoon inside the Marinasco tunnel, along the route between Riccò del Golfo and La Spezia. Francesco Garofalo, 44 years old, originally from Cardito, lost his life in a dramatic road accident that occurred before the eyes of his young son, who was injured but not in danger of life.
The crash, which was very violent, involved four cars and occurred shortly after 14pm. The dynamics are still being examined by the municipal police of La Spezia, but according to initial reconstructions, theauto driven by Garofalo may have skidded or attempted to overtake, ending up impacting with another vehicle.
The next pile-up involved two other cars, including that of three workers heading to a construction site: one of them, a young Albanian national, was transferred with a red code to the Sant'Andrea hospital; the other two suffered minor bruises.
Dramatic scenes presented themselves to the rescuers: crumpled cars, scattered sheet metal, screams of pain and rescuers working to extract the injured. 118 vehicles, the Red Cross, Public Assistance intervened on the spot, firefighters and law enforcement. The attempts of paramedics to save the 44-year-old were in vain, and he died shortly after the arrival of rescuers.
The son, in shock, was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment. The tunnel remained closed for several hours, with heavy repercussions on traffic and road conditions in the area. The Prosecutor's Office could open a case to determine any responsibilities. The cars involved were seized.

This is truly a sad situation that should make us all think. Accidents like this happen too often and I don't understand why. More must be done to ensure the safety of the roads and people.
