Secondigliano – Another episode of violence inside the Secondigliano prison: it occurred yesterday when a prisoner of Moroccan origin, just over twenty years old and subjected to the regime provided for by art. 14-bis of the Penitentiary System, started a fire in his cell.

The timely and professional intervention of the Penitentiary Police avoided more serious consequences, putting out the flames and securing the unit. During the subsequent transfer and personal search operations - aimed at ascertaining the possible possession of other lighters or dangerous objects - the prisoner violently attacked some officers and the surveillance inspector, causing the injury of several operators.
Two of the four police officers who were attacked and sought medical attention were given a 10-day prognosis.
Tension also in Pavilion T2
The episode follows another critical moment that occurred yesterday at Pavilion T2, where prison staff promptly managed a situation of internal tension.
The Penitentiary Union Confederation (CON.SI.PE.) expresses full solidarity and closeness to the colleagues involved, underlining the urgency of adopting concrete measures to protect the safety of those who work in the institutions.
“What happened demonstrates once again the importance of providing operators with modern and non-lethal tools, such as the taser, to deal with complex interventions without putting the safety of staff and inmates at risk”, says Bruno Faraldo, Campania regional director of CON.SI.PE.
And then she adds: “Our organization has long been calling for the use of tasers to be authorized in prison settings, in a controlled manner, to reduce the risk of fights and assaults.”
The national Vice President of CON.SI.PE., Luigi Castaldo, also intervened on the two episodes of violence, adding:“With the arrival of the heat, the critical issues in penitentiary facilities – often obsolete and lacking adequate facilities – become even more difficult to manage. Deflationary strategies are urgently needed to ease the pressure on the institutions and reduce tension levels.
Penitentiary Police personnel are on the front lines, often in places not designed for high temperatures, and need effective tools, such as the taser already in use by other State Corps, to ensure safety and prevent episodes of violence".
The CON.SI.PE. union renews its commitment to the safety of agents and in support of a penitentiary system that protects both the staff and the orderly conduct of prison life. The union reiterates its willingness to engage in a constructive dialogue with the Penitentiary Administration to identify concrete and sustainable solutions.

The episode in the Secondigliano prison is very worrying and shows that there are serious problems in the management of security. It is important that adequate measures are taken to avoid similar situations in the future. The prisoners must be monitored better.
