Sorrento – A timely intervention by the Coast Guard of Castellammare di Stabia avoided the worst this morning in the port of Sorrento, where a 76-year-old man was rescued from his sailing vessel, half-sunken on the rocks.
In the early hours of the morning, the 6-meter sailboat, driven by the elderly sailor, began to take on water near the dock. The alarm was promptly handled by the Maritime Directorate of Naples, which coordinated the intervention of the personnel of the Coast Guard Stabiese, led by Commander Andrea Pellegrino.
On board the GCB157 dinghy, Petty Officer Marco Orazzo and Simone Ruocco reached the scene, managing to secure the man – who remained unharmed – and recover the vessel, which was now almost completely submerged.
The operation avoided not only a possible personal drama, but also the risk of pollution in one of the most popular tourist areas of the Sorrento Coast.
The Coast Guard reminds us of the importance of maintenance of the boatie of the utmost caution at sea, especially for older or inexperienced sailors. The episode ended in the best possible way, but it could have turned into a tragedy without the immediate alarm and effective response of the maritime authorities.

It was a good job by the Coast Guard, but I don't understand how a 76-year-old man could sail alone. Boats should always be carefully inspected, especially older and smaller ones, which can sink easily.
