This weekend, the island of Ponza will be the focus of parliamentary attention thanks to an important roundtable discussion on the development and protection of Italy's smaller islands, a significant opportunity to address the critical issues and challenges these communities face daily.
The initiative was strongly supported by the Parliamentary Intergroup for Southern Development, Fragile Areas and Minor Islands and by the municipal administration of Ponza, with the aim of promoting concrete solutions to protect the Italian insular heritage. As reported by the President of the Intergroup, Hon. Alessandro Caramiello:
“During the works, we will discuss the main problems that concern the smaller islands, such as infrastructure, transportation, school, health and cultural services. The aim is to lay the foundations for new parliamentary initiatives, aimed at reducing the disparities in services between the islands and the rest of the country.
In this respect, I recall that the intergroup, composed of 40 parliamentarians belonging to all political parties, has been committed to this path since the beginning of the legislature, bringing forward various proposals to remedy the strong inequalities and improve the living conditions of island communities.
This will be an important opportunity to fuel dialogue and promote political action of unity, beyond any color and affiliation, because the needs of the smaller islands must be addressed with determination and collaboration" concludes Caramiello.
The day will be enriched by the stimulating speeches of the Honorable Simona Loizzo (Lega), of the former President of ANCIM Francesco del Deo and of the mayor of Ponza Francesco Ambrosino, according to whom "In the rapidly evolving regulatory framework on the theme of insularity, as also indicated by the recent constitutional amendment of art. 119, the island that I administer presents itself as an active body and promoter of the DDL on insularity, which will be the subject of a specific conference organized in Ponza this Saturday, therefore we cannot but be honored and proud to contribute to the definition of a regulatory framework that intends to enhance all the smaller islands of our country".
The event will be introduced by Ferdinando Femiano, delegate for institutional relations of Ponza, while the moderation of the table will be up to the journalist and parliamentary legislative Luca Antonio Pepe.

I find it interesting that we are talking about the smaller islands but I wonder if these meetings actually lead to concrete changes. Words are beautiful but facts are what count, let's hope there is a real commitment.
