A scorching Italy is preparing for the hottest weekend of the year, at least so far. Blame it on the African anticyclone Pluto, the same name as the Dantesque demon that presides over the fourth circle of hell, and which seems intent on making us experience an earthly version of the infernal pit.
According to Antonio Sanò, founder of iLMeteo.it, from Taranto to Parma it will be a succession of scorching highs that will reach 37-40°C, with peaks of real climate fever in much of the country. Taranto, queen of the heat, will reach 40 degrees, closely followed by cities such as Florence, Agrigento, SIRACUSA and Oristano that will stop just a breath below. In Rome, as well as in Foggia and Ragusa, the mercury column will settle at 38 degrees.
And it won't be any better at night: in many large cities the temperature won't drop below 27-28°C, creating a tropical climate that will turn rest into a test of endurance. The heat will be oppressive even where the thermometer seems milder, because the humidity will make the thermal perception even more unbearable.
The only relief will come on Saturday and Sunday for the Adriatic and Ionian sides, thanks to cooler winds from the Balkans that will slightly reduce humidity. But for the rest of the Peninsula, the Pluto anticyclone will continue to dominate, at least until July 4, when the weather models begin to suggest some signs of weakening, especially in the North with the arrival of thunderstorms in the mountain areas.
