Torre Annunziata – A large-scale Carabinieri operation began at dawn in the heart of the so-called "prison quadrilateral," a stronghold of the Gionta clan, which has been active in Torre Annunziata for decades.
A heavy blow dealt to one of the most deeply rooted and violent Camorra organizations in the Vesuvian area, following an investigation coordinated by the Naples District Anti-Mafia Directorate.
The raid, still ongoing, was carried out by the Torre Annunziata Investigative Unit, with the support of the Cacciatori Helicopter Squadron. The investigating judge issued 17 precautionary measures at the request of the Naples Prosecutor's Office: all arrests, targeting alleged members of the Gionta clan.
Among those arrested is also Gemma Donnarumma, wife of the historic clan leader Valentino Gionta, who served a life sentence, was released in May 2022.
According to investigators, the suspects are implicated in mafia association and extortion, aggravated by the Camorra method. Their criminal activities are thought to have focused on territorial control, the imposition of extortion, and a network of intimidation that has stifled the local economy for years, particularly in the area of Palazzo Fienga, a historic symbol of the clan's power.
Over 50 Carabinieri officers were deployed to enforce the orders and ensure the restoration of law and order in an area traditionally rife with crime.
The operation represents a further step forward in the strategy to dismantle the historic Camorra families in the Oplonti area, which have already been targeted several times in recent years but are still capable – according to investigators – of regenerating themselves through internal kinship and a network of supporters in the area.
Investigations are continuing to identify any additional perpetrators and map the gang's reorganization in greater detail.
