They feared that their criminal power and influence over the central areas of Naples could be undermined by the imminent release (which actually took place in August 2024) of the boss Nicola Rullo, known as o' nfamone, the leading man of the Contini clan.
A web of tensions, criminal strategies, and fears of a new Camorra war emerges from wiretaps contained in the precautionary order signed by investigating judge Gianluigi Visco, who dismantled the leadership of the Mazzarella clan last week.
The interviews reveal the internal dynamics of the clan and the concerns of the Buonerba family of Forcella about what will actually happen: the release from prison of Nicola Rullo, known as "o' nfamone", a leading figure in the Contini clan.
The conversations, recorded by investigators, the first dating back to the summer of 2023, paint a picture of rivalries, betrayals, and power struggles that could destabilize the Camorra's control over central Naples, with the risk of a violent escalation.
The threat of Nicola Rullo
The release of Nicholas Roll, represents a concrete threat to the Buonerbas and the Mazzarella clan. In fact, in a wiretap dated August 3, 2023, Eduardo Buonerba, along with his son Vincenzo and his wife Anna Panetti, expresses fear that the boss of the Contini clan, described as a "destroyer" and a "sick head," could exploit the internal tensions within the Mazzarella clan to seize control of the illicit business.
“Coincidentally, Nicola left, now he's taking everything,” warns Eduardo, fearing the risk of a war between clans.
Wiretaps reveal a criminal organization in turmoil, with the Buonerbas worried about losing ground in the face of the Contini clan's rise. The management of illicit activities, from extortion to drug dealing, is marred by internal rivalries and a fragmented leadership, which could pave the way for broader conflicts.
The release of Rullo, a charismatic and feared figure, is perceived as a turning point, capable of reshaping the criminal landscape in the heart of Naples. Investigators, closely monitoring these dynamics, are working to prevent an escalation that could transform the city's streets into a battlefield.
Shocking Interceptions: The Buonerbas and the Clan's Strategies
On October 24, 2023, a long conversation between brothers Eduardo and Pasquale Buonerba sheds light on the internal dynamics of the Mazzarella clan and the role of his brother-in-law Salvatore DiCaprio. At the heart of the discussion is the possibility of separating DiCaprio's criminal interests, who manages the Somma Vesuviana area, from those of the Buonerba clan in Naples.
Pasquale, with firm tones, underlines that once divided, the problems of Somma Vesuviana, such as the requests for help from “Lucianiello” Jar or Emanuele Amoroso's violent actions, must not concern their organization. "If Totore [DiCaprio] is doing his own thing, I don't have to let him know what I'm doing," Pasquale says, drawing a clear line.
The wiretaps also reveal an extortion episode: Pasquale says he asked Vincenzo Terracciano, aka "Siè Scè," if the extortion proceeds had arrived, and received confirmation of the payment. But it was territorial control that dominated the discussions.
Pasquale boasts of earning "€4000" by independently managing Naples, dreaming of "being the King" with a weekly income of €1500. His vision of the "underworld" is clear: you don't need to get up early, but you need to be present at night, ready to shoot to command respect. "People have to love you, but they have to be afraid," he maintains, criticizing those, like DiCaprio, who fail to inspire fear.
Suspicions and Betrayals: The DiCaprio Case
The conversations reveal a deep mistrust of DiCaprio, accused of disloyalty. Pasquale recalls an episode in which Gaetano Galiero, on behalf of Barattolo, allegedly handed him 500 euros intended for DiCaprio, who, however, kept quiet about it.
"He knows he's at fault," he comments. Even more seriously, Pasquale predicts that, with Nicola Rullo's release from prison, DiCaprio could be attacked by Michele Rullo, a member of the Contini clan.
Furthermore, he accuses Di Caprio of having "burned" him in front of the leaders of the Mazzarella clan, such as Michele Mazzarella and Salvatore Barile, undermining his credibility. A significant episode concerns Gaetano Starace, suspected of unauthorized drug dealing in the territory of the Good grass.
Pasquale admits that, without concrete evidence, he didn't take direct action against him to avoid "making a fool of himself" with Michele Mazzarella. "If I have confirmation, I'll shoot him in the face," he says, emphasizing the need to respect the "Buonerba system."
