Caserta– A 58-year-old farmer was arrested yesterday by Carabinieri officers from the Caserta station and the Forestry Department for stealing water intended for the gardens of the Royal Palace of Caserta, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The man, accused of aggravated and repeated theft of public water, damage to a cultural heritage site, encroachment on state land, and unauthorized management of agricultural waste, allegedly endangered the ecosystem and biodiversity of the Bourbon site.

The operation, coordinated by the Santa Maria Capua Vetere Public Prosecutor's Office, was launched following investigations into the causes of an abnormal water shortage in the Royal Palace's fountains and pools, which are fed by the Carolino Aqueduct.

The Carabinieri have ascertained that the entrepreneur, concessionaire of an agricultural land owned by the Diocesan Institute for the Support of the Clergy of Caserta, had made an illegal connection, damaging a Bourbon tank of the aqueduct.

Through a 145-meter-long system of polyethylene pipes, water was diverted to his land, adjacent to the Bosco di San Silvestro, to irrigate six different areas and feed a 1.000-liter cistern. A hole in the palace's perimeter wall allowed the pipes to pass through.

The affected area and the material used for the fraudulent harvesting were seized, while the arrested person was placed under house arrest. Authorities emphasized that the illegal activity, if not stopped, could have seriously compromised the delicate ecological balance of the royal gardens, an integral part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The article talks about a businessman who stole water for the Royal Palace gardens, but I don't understand how such a thing could be done. It's important to protect our cultural and natural heritage, and I hope justice is done.
