Seizure of an illegal workshop in Castellammare
CAstellammare – An operation by the Naples Forestry Carabinieri has uncovered serious environmental irregularities at a ferrous metal processing plant located in Schito, Castellammare di Stabia.

The operation, conducted by the local Carabinieri Forestry Unit, is part of a broader campaign of controls aimed at combating uncontrolled waste dumping and illegal dumping in the Sarno River basin, an area plagued by environmental problems for years.
During the inspection, the military found a series of serious violations: the company operated without the required environmental documentation, used welders without filtering devices, illegally produced and disposed of metal waste, and released illegal emissions into the atmosphere.
Furthermore, unauthorized discharges into the public sewer system were detected. The inspection revealed a worrying scenario: inside a warehouse measuring approximately 400 square meters and in a 200 square meter outdoor area, various types of waste were being stored, including wooden doors, furniture, and tires, in complete disregard of current regulations.
The owner of the company, a 62-year-old resident of a neighboring municipality, was reported to the competent judicial authority. Carabinier They ordered the seizure of the entire warehouse and the external area, sealing off a structure that posed a danger to the environment and public health.
The Schito incident is just the latest chapter in a deeply rooted problem in the Castellammare di Stabia area and, more generally, in the Sarno River basin. The uncontrolled dumping of waste, by both private individuals and businesses, continues to blight the landscape and compromise the quality of water and soil.
The Sarno River, already considered one of the most polluted waterways in Europe, suffers from illegal dumping and poor waste management, which fuel a vicious cycle of environmental degradation. The causes of this phenomenon are multiple.
On the one hand, the lack of effective controls in the past has allowed many businesses to operate irregularly, evading environmental regulations. On the other, the lack of a widespread culture of respect for the environment and adequate infrastructure for the disposal of hazardous waste contributes to exacerbating the problem.
Many small and medium-sized businesses, like the one involved in the operation, lack the resources or willingness to comply with regulations, opting for illicit solutions that reduce costs at the expense of the ecosystem.
Waste abandonment and unauthorized dumping have a devastating impact. Ferrous materials and hazardous waste, if not disposed of properly, can release toxic substances into the soil and groundwater, compromising the quality of drinking and agricultural water. Emissions into the atmosphere, lacking filtration systems, contribute to air pollution, posing health risks to residents.
Furthermore, the accumulation of waste such as tires and furniture encourages the proliferation of illegal landfills, which become hotbeds of degradation and potential sources of fires. The Sarno River, in particular, is a prime example.
Its waters, contaminated by industrial and domestic waste, are a symbol of the failure of environmental management. Remediation efforts, begun years ago, are progressing slowly, hampered by the persistence of illegal practices like those discovered in Schito.
The Carabinieri Forestry Group of Naples, with its regional branches, is intensifying inspections to curb the phenomenon. The Castellammare operation is part of a broader plan aimed at ensuring compliance with waste discharges and production activities in the Sarno basin.
Law enforcement hopes that, through consistent and decisive action, the area can be restored to a state of legality and environmental sustainability. However, repressive measures alone are not enough.
An integrated approach is needed, combining rigorous controls, effective sanctions, and awareness-raising initiatives to promote responsible waste management. Local authorities, associations, and citizens must collaborate to build a more efficient and accessible waste disposal system that discourages illegal practices.
The Via Schito case highlights the need for cultural and structural change. While the Carabinieri Forestry Police's inspections represent a step forward in the fight against environmental degradation, it is also essential that local institutions invest in waste management infrastructure and environmental education campaigns.
Only a joint effort can break the cycle of pollution plaguing Castellammare di Stabia and the Sarno basin, restoring the area to the dignity and health it deserves. Operations like the one conducted in Schito demonstrate that the road to sustainability is still long, but not impossible.
With continued monitoring and increased public awareness, the dream of a clean Sarno River and a land free of litter could become a reality.

The Carabinieri Forestali operation appears to be a positive development for Castellammare, but more controls and awareness-raising are needed to prevent similar situations from recurring in the future. People need to understand the importance of waste management.
I agree that controls are essential, but we also need to work on environmental awareness. Too many people don't realize the damage they can cause to the environment with their irresponsible behavior.
