Chaos in the emergency room due to a drunk's anger
UA night of chaos and violence took place in the emergency room of the San Leonardo hospital in Castellammare di Stabia.
The protagonist of the unpleasant incident was a 49-year-old from Torre del Greco, Pasquale Visciano, already known to law enforcement, who unleashed his anger against the healthcare facility and its security personnel.
It all started from a trivial reason: the man, accompanying his wife to the emergency room with a white code (the least urgent), could not bear the waiting time.
In what appears to have been a sudden fit of rage—perhaps heightened by alcohol—Visciano first punched the glass partition separating the triage area from the waiting room, then attacked three security guards who had intervened to calm the situation.
Alerted by the alarm at the hospital, officers from the Castellammare company responded quickly. After subduing the man in a fit of rage, they arrested him on charges of assaulting a public official and criminal damage. Visciano, born in Torre del Greco on March 24, 1976, was transferred to Poggioreale prison where he will await trial.
The incident highlights two chronic problems in our healthcare system: long waits in emergency rooms, and the safety of healthcare workers, who are increasingly targeted by assaults. Just a few weeks ago, a similar incident occurred in a hospital in the Naples area.
The medical director of San Leonardo Hospital, reached for comment, expressed solidarity with the attacked staff: "We firmly condemn these acts of violence. Our staff often work in difficult conditions and deserve respect. We are evaluating measures to increase safety."
Meanwhile, the destroyed glass wall has already been replaced, but the mark left by this night of madness remains in the mood of the operators who, once again, found themselves dealing with the aggression of a user.
