A dive that turned tragic. A 57-year-old man from Naples died this morning in the sea near Capaccio-Paestum, in the province of Salerno, before the astonished eyes of swimmers near the Mare Pineta Camping site.
It was 10:30 a.m. when witnesses alerted the Port Authority: a man had just jumped into the water and never resurfaced. The immediate intervention of rescuers was in vain. Firefighters from the Agropoli detachment arrived on the scene, supported by a helicopter from the Pontecagnano operations center . The firefighters searched the area and managed to recover the body, now lifeless.
The cause of death is still unclear: a sudden illness or poor sea conditions are suspected. According to initial findings, the victim was in the area for a few days of relaxation. Carabinieri and emergency medical services also responded to the scene, but were unable to do anything other than confirm the deceased.
