Naples – Wave of hot Record and system on the verge of collapse: unions raise alarm over conditions of Enel workers in Campania, forced to work grueling shifts with safety risks and increasingly precarious services to citizens.

Exhausted workers: “Organization has become improvisation”. “Tragedy is no longer being touched, it is being expected” – this is the harsh accusation from Filctem-Cgil, Flaei-Cisl and Uiltec-Uil, who in a joint note denounce: Unsustainable on-call shifts, with systematic violation of breaks (the 11 legal hours between one service and another “are an illusion”).

Insufficient staff and abuse of service orders to cover up the shortages. Accident narrowly avoided in recent days: a technician, after hours of uninterrupted work, was involved in a serious episode (“only by a miracle there were no victims”).

“Workers are left alone, squeezed to the bone – explains Lella Messina, secretary of Filctem-Cgil Campania –. The company doesn’t hire, cuts costs instead of investing, and unloads everything on the staff.”

Blackouts on the Rise and Service on the Edge

The consequences also fall on citizens: increased breakdowns due to overheating of infrastructure. Ever longer repair times due to the lack of technicians.
Contractors under pressure, forced to cover grueling shifts without sufficient resources.

“The network is collapsing, and Enel, instead of solving the problems, hides them, asking the staff to perform miracles,” the unions attack.

The request: immediate interventions

Organizations are asking for: urgent hiring to cover real needs. Respect for shifts and legal breaks and an extraordinary maintenance plan to avoid blackouts.

A crisis meeting with Enel management is expected next week, as thermometers continue to rise and tensions among workers grow.

After years of cuts and wild outsourcing, the Campania energy system is showing increasingly deep cracks. With the torrid climate and peak electricity demand, the risk is that the next “near-miss tragedy” becomes reality

It is true that there are serious problems for Enel workers in Campania, but it is also important to see the bright side. The situation is difficult but people are doing their best to maintain services.

Even though unions speak of grueling shifts, it must be considered that the energy sector is complex and there are challenges to be faced daily to improve the overall situation.
