Naples – The Galleria Umberto I, an architectural jewel in the heart of Naples, continues to embody the city’s great contradiction: a symbol of beauty and history that, as night falls, transforms into a no man’s land, marked by abandonment and violence.

Despite recent restorations and promotional campaigns celebrating its charm, attracting thousands of tourists every day, the Galleria once again becomes a scene of degradation at night. Groups of thugs, as reported by residents and visitors, gather to play football, damaging the precious historical friezes and delicate mosaics that adorn the structure.

But that's not all: episodes of verbal and physical aggression against tourists are becoming more and more frequent, fueling a sense of insecurity that clashes with the image of a welcoming Naples.

The situation is aggravated by the lack of night surveillance and the failure to install gates, which would protect this monument, one of the most frequented in the city.

“It is unacceptable that such a representative place is left unattended,” complains a local shopkeeper. “During the day it is a source of pride, at night it becomes a risk for those who pass by.”

The city administration, urged by several parties, has assured that the gates will be installed by the beginning of the new year. But in the meantime, the lack of nighttime patrols is leaving room for gangs and thugs.

Galleria Umberto I is a beautiful place but as the article says, it becomes dangerous at night. It is sad to see that after the restoration there are no controls and tourists do not feel safe. A solution is needed.
