Naples' chief prosecutor: "We've liberated a significant portion of the city."
Naples – The Naples raid struck "a top-series Camorra," said Naples Prosecutor Gratteri during a press conference, where he outlined the operation by the Naples Flying Squad, which today, coordinated by the Naples District Anti-Mafia Directorate, executed 25 precautionary measures (including 18 arrests) against leaders and associates of the Mazzarella clan, a Neapolitan criminal cartel opposed to the Secondigliano Alliance.
For Gratteri, this is an important operation that has allowed, he emphasized, "the liberation of a significant part of the city." "We have demonstrated that they are here, but that we are here too, the state and the police are here.
In recent months, very serious crimes have been committed, and we have intervened to provide answers, like today's." During the notifications, the State Police found and seized a Camorra arsenal and drugs in a cold storage room in the Sant'Alfonso area of the city.
The investigation identified the leaders of the Mazzarella clan, which is known for its military control of important neighborhoods in the city. Thanks to the use of Trojans (capture devices installed on computer systems), it also documented extortion attempts, such as those against a shipyard (with threats and violence) and a pizzeria, as explained by Deputy Prosecutor Sergio Amato. The racket was also imposed on those who sold drugs, both at home and through delivery.
The Mazzarellas were involved in drug trafficking and dealing, and several stese (scooter-based raids involving gunfire) have been documented in areas believed to be under the control of rival clans.

This news is thought-provoking about the crime problem in Naples. It's important that law enforcement is active, but there are many other problems to address, such as unemployment and poverty, which fuel these phenomena.
