A 47-year-old nurse, OG, working at the “ San Pio” hospital in Benevento, was arrested in flagrante delicto by the Flying Squad of the Sannio Police Headquarters on charges of embezzlement.
The woman was arrested while stealing medications and medical supplies from the Internal Medicine department, where she worked. A search of her home in the province of Avellino led to the discovery of numerous batches of medications and medical supplies, similar to those found in her possession at the time of her arrest. She is currently under house arrest, awaiting judicial developments.
The investigations and the blitz
The arrest is the result of an investigative effort launched after a complaint from hospital management, who reported a large and unjustified disappearance of medications and medical supplies.
The discrepancies between actual consumption and recorded stocks aroused management's suspicions, prompting the Benevento Public Prosecutor's Office, led by Prosecutor Licia Fabrizi, to order further investigations. The investigation confirmed the suspicions: the nurse's conduct, already under observation, proved to be repeated and egregious.
According to hospital sources, the 47-year-old's transfer from the Emergency Room to the Internal Medicine department may have been decided precisely to monitor her work without arousing suspicion.
The theft of medications , in fact, continued even after the change of department, reinforcing the investigators' doubts. The Mobile Squad's raid caught the nurse red-handed, removing medications from the "San Pio" hospital. The subsequent house search further aggravated her situation, with the discovery of tens of kilos of medications and medical supplies.
The judicial framework
The nurse, currently under house arrest, will face charges of embezzlement. The Benevento Prosecutor's Office is continuing its investigation to precisely define the charges and determine the extent of the damages. Under the principle of presumption of innocence, the woman's guilt will be definitive only with a final sentence. Meanwhile, the hospital is awaiting the case's development before taking any disciplinary action.
A case that shakes the Sannio healthcare system
The nurse's arrest represents a serious blow to the San Pio Hospital and the Benevento healthcare community. The incident raises questions about the effectiveness of control systems and the need to monitor staff to ensure the protection of essential healthcare resources for patients. Investigations will continue to determine whether this is an isolated incident or a more widespread practice, while the city awaits answers and justice.
