INGV appoints new directors of its scientific departments and sections for the three-year period 2025-2028.

–The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) announced today the appointment of the new directors of its scientific departments and research sections for the three-year period 2025-2028.

Starting in September 2025, the Departments will be led by Maria Fabrizia Buongiorno (Environment), Salvatore Stramondo (Earthquakes), and Stefano Felice Branca (Volcanoes). New appointments and reappointments have also been made for the Sections and Observatories: Micol Todesco will direct the Bologna Section, Tomaso Esposti Ongaro the Pisa Section, Giuseppe Di Stefano the Rome 1 Section, Vincenzo Romano the Rome 2 Section, Lucia Pappalardo the Vesuvius Observatory in Naples, Annamaria Vicari the Irpinia Section, Salvatore Gambino the Etna Observatory in Catania, and Antonio Paonita the Palermo Section.

Lucia Margheriti, Director of the National Earthquake Observatory, and Francesca Pacor, Head of the Milan Section, remain in office, as their terms are not expiring.

“We are proud to welcome the new directors appointed by the Board of Directors – declared Fabio Florindo, President of the INGV I am confident that they will be able to expertly lead the research, monitoring, and surveillance activities for seismic, volcanic, and tsunami risks, consolidating the Institute's role as a point of reference for the national scientific community.

Florindo emphasized the importance of participating in European and international research projects, which will strengthen infrastructure networks and deepen our understanding of how the planet works, from earthquakes and volcanoes to the effects of climate change and sustainable energy resources.

Director General Giovanni Torre, joining in the wishing everyone success, highlighted the value of dialogue between the directors and the INGV's administration in addressing the challenges of scientific research and pursuing INGV's mission with determination and innovation.
