A new frontier in the fight against coastal pollution is taking shape along the Caserta coastline. Following the deployment of sea-clearing boats, the Province of Caserta has announced the installation of two floating debris barriers at the mouths of the Volturno and Garigliano rivers, in the municipalities of Castel Volturno and Sessa Aurunca. The goal is clear: to intercept plastic and floating debris before they end up in the sea, thus protecting water quality, the marine environment, and the health of citizens.
The project, part of the "Clean Sea" plan, is based on an innovative, zero-impact technology called Pelikan River , capable of retaining up to 100% of waste without interfering with fauna, flora, or navigation. This system is designed to address the root cause of pollution, inspired by the 2022 "SalvaMare" law, which promotes waste recovery from inland and marine waters.
The barriers, whose technical inspections are already underway, complete the environmental defense system that the Province has implemented along the forty kilometers of coastline under its jurisdiction, where naval units equipped with drones and underwater vehicles already operate to remove waste and monitor the seabed.
"We are the first in Campania to adopt an integrated strategy that works both at sea and upstream, along the rivers ," said Anacleto Colombiano, President of the Province of Caserta. "Stopping waste at its source means not only improving water quality and public health, but also enhancing our coastline from a tourism and environmental perspective."
The project is the result of a concrete synergy between local authorities, with the Provincial Environmental Department and the municipalities of Castel Volturno , Cellole, Sessa Aurunca, and Mondragone working together to ensure the initiative's complete success. A decisive, and finally visible, step forward toward a truly cleaner sea.




The initiative is very interesting and could lead to significant improvements in water quality. However, it would be important to monitor the effectiveness of the Pelikan River system over time and assess any impacts on the local ecosystem.
