Three months after the tragedy that struck Monte Faito, a day of commemoration will be held on Thursday, July 17, dedicated to the victims of the cable car crash that occurred on April 17, killing four people.

The initiative is promoted by the Faito Doc Festival, in collaboration with the Monteamare Cultural Association and numerous local organizations, to remember, reflect, and launch a collective appeal to ensure that Faito is not abandoned.

In the cable car square, a symbol of the mountain and a hub of remembrance, there will be a series of testimonies, artistic, and spiritual moments. "Over the years, the Faito cable car has become much more than a means of transportation.

It is a symbol, a muse, a place of the soul. The tragedy of April 17th shattered lives and raised profound questions, but it also united us in the demand for truth and justice,” say artistic directors Nathalie Rossetti and Turi Finocchiaro, creators of the Festival, now in its 18th edition (scheduled from July 19th to 27th).

The victims of the tragedy – Carmine Parlato, a passionate engineer; the English couple Graeme Derek Winn and Margaret Elaine; and young Janan Suliman – will be remembered together with their families and Janan's brother, Taheb, who miraculously survived.

The program of the day

The commemoration will begin at 11 a.m. with a yoga session led by Annamaria De Gennaro, followed by podcasts, reflections, and testimonials from business owners, EAV workers, religious leaders, artists, and citizens. After a community picnic, the afternoon will continue with spiritual interludes and a piano performance by maestro Giuseppe De Rosa.

The climax will be at 19:XNUMX PM, with the release of biodegradable balloons, each containing a thought, message, or prayer in memory of the victims. The day will also be an opportunity to share ideas and jointly develop new initiatives to defend Mount Faito, "which lives on in those who love it."

The Festival and remembrance through cinema

The Faito Doc Festival, which opens on July 19th, will dedicate a special focus to the cable car and Mount Faito. Three short films created in the wake of the tragedy will be screened in the Casa del Cinema, nestled in the woods:

“With eyes up” by the Radio Asharam Collective,

“Where the heart rises” by Anna Delgado,

and “L'amore sospeso” by Stefano Cormino (filmed in 2012).

All the films have the same running time: 8 minutes, exactly the same as the cable car ride from Castellammare to Faito. A symbolic way to restore voice and vision to a place suspended between sky and sea.

During the opening evening there will also be a special tribute to Luigi Torino, founder of ProFaito, and to Gigino Vanacore, a historic symbolic figure of Monte Faito, witness to its beauty and its fragility.

July 17th is intended to be much more than a commemoration: it is a collective act of love towards a place that deserves respect, care, and memory.
