Southern Italy returns to tell its story with the timeless language of fairy tales thanks to “The Tale of Tales – 390 Years of Magic”, a theatrical and cultural project sweeping Southern Italy with the enduring charm of Giambattista Basile. On the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the birth of the great Neapolitan author and the 390th anniversary of the publication of his most celebrated work, the Ministry of Culture – Directorate General for Entertainment has funded an initiative that blends memory and future, art and territory.
Produced by Best Live srl, the project brings the fairy tale to the places that inspired it: museums, noble palaces, historic villages and squares come alive again thanks to theatrical performances, baroque concerts, literary readings and sensory journeys that enhance the cultural heritage of the South. The heart of the entire festival is the traveling show “The True Story of Cinderella”, a free adaptation of "The Cinderella Cat" Written by Domenico Basile. Through four short acts set in different settings, the show questions the audience about the true face of the fairytale heroine, reversing points of view and offering a critical look at tradition.
The project will be enhanced by a series of high-profile events: from a reading by Mariano Rigillo at the Capodimonte Museum, accompanied by Isabella Parmiciano on the violin, to a conference on the role of women in Basile's fairy tales at the National Library of Naples, and performances by Milvia Marigliano, Geppy Gleijeses, Ippolita Baldini, and Lucianna De Falco, all accompanied by live music and striking historical settings.
The event isn't just an artistic endeavor: it's an immersive experience that engages local communities, with free or nominal admission, to ensure participation and inclusion. The South returns to the forefront, not as a periphery, but as the narrative center of the country. Villages like Sessa Cilento, Bracigliano, villaricca and Santa Maria Capua Vetere become stages for an intangible heritage that Basile, the first to transcribe the tales of oral tradition, made eternal.
