They were the terror of Fiat 500X, Jeep Renegade, and Smart car owners. Specializing in the theft of mechanical components from these models, they acted with speed and surgical precision, targeting cars parked throughout Campania.
But their criminal "career" ended at dawn today, when the Carabinieri of the Benevento provincial command executed a house arrest warrant against two 25-year-old Neapolitans, on the orders of the preliminary investigations judge of the Sannio court.
The investigation, coordinated by the Benevento Prosecutor's Office, reconstructed at least sixteen thefts committed between March 2024 and May 2025, all with the same modus operandi: the thieves broke the left front windshield, dismantled the car's most expensive parts—such as headlights and control units—in just a few minutes, and fled in support vehicles, then resold the parts on the black market through online ads.
The investigative breakthrough came after a theft that occurred on the night of March 25-26, 2024, in Montesarchio. Thanks to analysis of the area's video surveillance systems, officers were able to trace the car used in the robbery and, subsequently, the identities of the two suspects.
But not just thefts: the two young men are also accused of resisting a public official, in connection with a high-voltage chase that took place in Solofra. After stealing the front and rear lights of a car, the thieves They failed to stop at the Carabinieri's checkpoint, speeding down the A16 motorway in the wrong direction and repeatedly attempting to ram the police car. This escape seriously endangered the safety of the officers and other motorists.

It's not just a theft problem, but also a public safety one. Thieves are young and very bold, which makes us reflect on how kids are raised today. We need a better strategy.
The article describes a very worrying phenomenon of car thefts, but I wonder if there are sufficient measures in place to prevent such acts. The police should step up checks in the most affected municipalities.
