Naples – Smartphones in one hand, knives in the other. This is the disturbing picture emerging from the nighttime patrols of the Carabinieri of the Naples Central Company, working in the heart of the city's nightlife, between the historic center and the Chiaia neighborhood. Another tense evening, with confiscated weapons, drugs, and young people reported.
During the searches carried out in the university area and in the “ baretti ” area, the soldiers stopped three boys – aged 16, 20 and 25 – found in possession of a 15-centimetre switchblade, a homemade knuckle-duster and even a nunchaku stick.
Potentially lethal weapons in the hands of young people who seem to experience transgression not as a crime, but as a display on social media.
“I didn't mean to do anything bad, just take some photos.”
"I didn't mean anything bad, just a few photos," the youngest boy declared during the search. These are shocking words, coming from seemingly "normal" kids from respectable families, seeking unhealthy notoriety by following violent and bold models borrowed from TV series and online content.
The city becomes a scenic backdrop for Instagram stories and TikTok Lives that display more arrogance than awareness. This unprecedented social media drift is sometimes difficult to comment on and interpret.
The minor, reported along with the other two, was handed over to his mother, who was incredulous and visibly mortified.
But it doesn't stop there
The checks also led to the reporting to the Prefecture of 13 young people found in possession of narcotics. On the traffic front, 52 traffic tickets were issued, 15 of which were for failure to wear a helmet. A total of 21 scooters were seized.
Two additional reports concerned a 17-year-old caught providing false personal information, and a 19-year-old who attempted to evade a checkpoint without a helmet, putting his own safety and that of others at risk.
The inspections also included the usual incident of illegal parking: an unauthorized parking attendant was identified and reported near the bars.
Finally, attention is also being paid to nightclubs, thanks to the collaboration with the staff of the ASL Napoli 1. As many as 11 regulations have been issued for hygiene and sanitation deficiencies, demonstrating comprehensive vigilance that encompasses safety, legality, and public health.
A nightlife that too often shies away from wholesome fun and slips into illegality. And that requires constant monitoring and even more thorough prevention efforts.
The article highlights a worrying situation for Naples' youth. It's incredible how young people can find themselves in possession of such dangerous weapons. But perhaps more education and support from families and society is needed.
