Napoli bets on Maradona for Euro 2032

NNaples – Naples is launching its bid to host the 2032 European Football Championship. The city has announced its intention to nominate the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium as one of the five Italian venues designated by UEFA for the prestigious tournament, jointly awarded to Turkey and Italy.

In view of the October 2026 deadline for the selection of stadiums, the municipal administration, led by Mayor Gaetano Manfredi, has already prepared an intervention plan worth approximately €10 million to upgrade the Fuorigrotta facility. The primary goal is to comply with UEFA standards and increase the capacity of the "Maradona".

Redevelopment and reopening works of the third ring road

The design guidance document, developed by the City of Naples, includes a series of crucial interventions. In addition to energy efficiency and seismic safety improvements, the reopening of the third ring is envisaged, which would allow for an increase in capacity of up to 10 seats.

The “Maradona,” home of Campania's only Serie A team and winner of the last 2024-2025 Scudetto, represents a symbol for the region, and Naples, already European Capital of Sport 2026, intends to make the most of this opportunity.

To ensure the complete implementation of the redevelopment project, Mayor Manfredi has formally requested financial support from the President of the Campania Region, Vincenzo De Luca. The request amounts to €150 million, drawn from regional programs dedicated to such activities.

The request to the Region is based on De Luca's already demonstrated dedication to sports facilities in other Campania cities and on the funding received to modernize facilities for the 2019 Universiade in Naples.

The overall goal of the Municipality of Naples, beyond its bid for Euro 2032, is to initiate a fruitful collaboration with the Region to generate positive returns, both sporting and non-sporting, for the entire region.

  • The idea of nominating the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium for the 2032 European Championships is an interesting one, but there are doubts about how the redevelopment work required to meet UEFA standards will be financed.

    • I hope the municipality can find the necessary funds, given that there are always so many expenses and I don't know if it will be easy to raise all that money in time for the work.
