Naples – As the Gulf of Naples becomes increasingly crowded with luxury yachts and tourist boats, a worrying phenomenon is once again in the spotlight: that of "sea pirates," specialized thieves who operate close to the coast, taking advantage of restless nights or calm seabeds to attack moored vessels.

The latest incident occurred at first light today, in the waters off Mergellina, where the tender of a maxi sailing yacht moored in the picturesque harbour between the tourist port and Castel dell'Ovo was stolen.

The theft, which presumably occurred during the night, was reported in the early hours of the morning by the vessel's captain, who contacted the Guardia di Finanza – Naval Air Operations Department of Naples to file a complaint.

The Guardia di Finanza's raid and the discovery in Vigliena

The search was launched immediately. Several naval vessels were already patrolling the coast, and one of them—engaged in a low-speed reconnaissance—identified the man hidden in a dock on the San Giovanni a Teduccio coast, in the Vigliena area.

The vessel, fortunately intact, had been cleverly hidden among other pleasure boats, probably waiting to be resold or dismantled.

Security alert: yachts under siege in ports and harbours

The incident refocuses attention on a real security crisis that recurs every summer along the Campania coast: thefts at sea. Tenders, outboard motors, nautical equipment, and even entire vessels become targets of organized gangs that move with extreme speed and precision. This situation is fueled by ever-expanding nautical tourism, with the Naples harbor increasingly frequented by high-end vessels, often at anchor and therefore more vulnerable.

"These are true modern-day pirates," says a regular shipowner in the area, "who know the territory perfectly and exploit the darkness and lack of direct surveillance. They often operate without leaving a trace, selling the tenders on the black market or dismantling them for spare parts."

Reinforced controls and targeted patrols

In response to this growing phenomenon, the Guardia di Finanza has strengthened controls along the entire coastal strip, with air and naval units operating daily between Posillipo, Mergellina, Capri, and the Portici coastline.

Thanks also to this device, the stolen tender was recovered in record time today, demonstrating the effectiveness of widespread surveillance.

But concern remains for a high-risk summer season, in which the Gulf of Naples, a hub of international tourism and a nautical paradise, also finds itself the scene of small-time, specialized crime, increasingly skilled and difficult to combat.

Meanwhile, shipowners are breathing a sigh of relief at today's recovery, but are calling for greater protection and coordination, even in the most exposed anchorage areas. Because amidst all its luxury and beauty, the Neapolitan sea cannot become a land of conquest for coastal raiders.
