Naples celebrates the return of palm trees to Viale Augusto, in Fuorigrotta, with the completion of an ambitious redevelopment project that restores splendor and functionality to one of the city's most important thoroughfares.
The project, inaugurated today, July 15, goes beyond the replanting of the iconic palm trees, encompassing a complete restyling of the roadway, sidewalks, green spaces, and street furniture, redesigning the historic thoroughfare in a modern and sustainable way.
A wide-ranging project
The works, carried out in collaboration with the Superintendency, brought back to Viale Augusto 173 Washingtonia robusta palms, chosen to preserve the landscape identity of the avenue, and 151 Chamaerops humilis dwarf palms in the side flowerbeds.
"We have restored the original architectural design," Mayor Gaetano Manfredi said , "ensuring maintenance and an automatic irrigation system. This project is part of a major investment plan to improve the city's greenery and livability."
The roadway has been completely renovated with the resurfacing of the road, from the base layer to the surface mat, while damaged drains and manhole covers have been realigned or replaced.
Cleaning the rainwater collection system will prevent the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall. The sidewalks, finished with new porphyry cobblestone paving, offer greater safety and accessibility.
The central flowerbeds, the heart of the project, were enriched with new trees, while the existing pines and cedars were subjected to stability tests. Three trees, deemed at risk due to poor root stability, were felled to ensure safety. "With approximately 300 new palm trees," emphasized Vincenzo Santagada, Councilor for Green Spaces, "we have restored Viale Augusto's urban character, strengthening the neighborhood's identity."
Street furniture and functionality
The project is completed with the installation of bike racks, benches, waste bins, and cast iron bollards, elements that improve the aesthetics and usability of the public space. This project not only enhances Fuorigrotta's historical and landscape heritage, but also responds to the needs of a forward-looking city, focusing on sustainability and urban decor.
Viale Augusto thus returns to being a symbol of Naples, greener, safer, and more welcoming for residents and visitors.
